Von Vargas joins Students for Pro-Test March
Students to State: Fully Fund Education Kelsey Volkmann (Kelsey Volkmann/Examiner) Students march in downtown Baltimore on Wednesday to demand the state of Maryland fully fund education. Oct 17, 2007 6:22 PM (36 days ago) by Kelsey Volkmann, The Examiner BALTIMORE (Map, News) - Chanting "Who's money? Our money!" more than 200 students and protesters from around Baltimore took to the streets Wednesday to march while asking for increased funding for public schools. The Baltimore Algebra Project routinely pickets to raise awareness about Bradford vs. Maryland State Board of Education, when a judge ruled in 1996 that the state underfunded Baltimore City students by $800 million. The March for Jobs and Education started at City Hall and continued past the Inner Harbor as protesters held signs that read, "No education, no life." "We are tired of them cutting funding for schools," said Ryan Mason, one of the march organizers. "It goes against the students and against the public so we are taking back the streets." Even local hip-hop artists, including Von Vargas, attended. "They spend money on everything else so students who want to take advantage of the educational system can't," Vargas said. kvolkmann@baltimoreexaminer.com Article Link:http://www.examiner.com/a-995220~Students_to_state__Fully_fund_education.html
VonVargas performs@ Anti Gang Summit w/ Sen. Jones
Sen. Verna Jones Leads Weekend Anti-Gang Summit Donna Marie Owens BALTIMORE, MD (2007-10-22) Rap music fills the auditorium of Mount Saint Joseph High School in West Baltimore, where several dozen kids, parents and community members have assembled on a Saturday morning for an anti-gang summit. Von Vargas, a Urban Inspirational hip-hop artist, is spitting out inspirational rhymes that stress faith, and non-violence. Resisting violence and steering clear of gangs--were common themes during the day-long summit. The meeting also included guest speakers that youth could relate to, like the rapper: Von Vargas, plus resource information and workshops that tackled topics ranging from gangs, to behavior management. The event was co-sponsored by State Senator Verna Jones, who represents the 44th Legislative District, the Community Building Network, a group of neighborhood associations and leaders. Sen. Jones, whose district includes West and Southwest Baltimore, said many of her constituents are concerned about gangs and their growing influence over Baltimore's youth. IC: I was hearing that gangs have a presence in the schools. They're starting to infiltrate into elementary schools. IC: Plus the community organizational leaders saying we need to focus on this. There are deaths happening. There's not an underground movement anymore, this is above ground." Indeed, some city school educators at Saturday's event acknowledged the presence of gangs at their schools, and police say they've identified dozens of gangs wearing their colors, including the Bloods and Crips. Stephanie Covington is one of the principals at Booker T. Washington Middle School in West Baltimore. IC: "Yes, we do have gangs at Booker T. But the remedy to that is to have activities of interest that will pull the best out of the children. Covington and Dean Scott, a counselor and teacher at the school, brought nearly a dozen young male students to the summit, all part of a school mentoring group called Male Minds Moving. Dean Scott explains the acronym for MOVING. IC: "Motivation, organized, vivacious, independent, N is for noble, and G, gentlemen. Malik Gregory, 13, is president of that group. He and other participants said they'd heard about gangs, but also knew of their negative consequences. IC: "I think that children should stay out of gangs and also adults and teenagers. Because it all add up to death, killing and being in jail. To keep kids from wanting to join gangs in the first place, youth minister Benjamin Barnwell of New Creation Church of Jesus Christ in Southwest Baltimore, spoke about peer pressure, fitting in. He also posed some sobering questions to the kids. IC: How many of you know somebody under the age of 16, who's in jail. Put your hands down. How many of you know somebody under the age of 16, who has been arrested? Nearly every child in the room raised their hands. Rev. Barnwell urged the young people to make sound choices and consult positive adults whether they needed information about gangs, or other challenges they face, while coming of age. IC: The message is focused on their power to influence their own future. And three key factors, we want them to pay attention to. The power that they have to learn, the power that they have to lead, the power that they have to love.' The kids seemed to take positive messages away from the summit. For instance, Deonte Austin, 13, says he's too busy planning for his future to join a gang. IC:"I want to be an ornithologist, who studies birds. Or if that doesn't work, a lawyer or a NFL player. Organizers said that if even one youngster who participated came away with additional motivation and determination to stay on the right track, and away from gangs, then the summit was a success.
